The Faculty of Laws and Political Science (FLPS) of The University of Bamenda (UBa) is one out of the eleven faculties, schools or colleges created by Decree No 2011/045 of 8 March, 2011, to organize The University of Bamenda. The vision of the FLPS is aligned to the missions assigned to the University of Bamenda defined in Article 2 of the 2011 Decree and the objectives of the Growth and Employment Strategy Paper, which is that of transforming Cameroon to an emergent economy by 2035.There are four Departments in the FLPS having a number of options at the undergraduate level and graduate levels, which embody this orientation. It is against this background that both the classical academic and professional programmes of the FLPS have been designed as represented hereunder. The four Departments are:

  • Department of English Private Law
  • Department of Public Law
  • Department of Political Science
  • Department of French Private Law.

To become a Premier Faculty  in Africa in training students in Law and Political Sciences  in the Onxon- Cantab tradition.

FACULTY MISSION

To get our graduates grounded in  legal knowledge and professionalism, enhance their creativity and  self-discipline; guarantee their employability and enable them to contribute to the emergence of the nation by 2035.

 

As a corporate institution, the University of Bamenda accepts the responsibility of providing/ensuring the most congenital atmosphere for the academic, physical and moral development of its students. The following guidelines are set out for this purpose:

  1. The University expects students to conduct themselves decently and responsibly at all times, whether on or off campus.
  2. No student shall engage his/her fellow student or any member of the University or public in physical scuffles.
  3. While is it not required that students appear in suits and ties or expensive clothes, they should be neat and presentable at all times. This applies especially to their appearance in class and the restaurant
  4. All students should contribute to the cleanliness of the facilities put at their disposal. They should be avoid littering and should make maximum use of the dustbins provided
  5. No item or furniture should be moved out of the Common Rooms, Restaurant, Classrooms, or Library without permission. The full cost or damaged property will be borne by the students responsible for such lose or damage.
  6. The junior staff of the University (messengers, drivers, security men, yardmen, etc) are responsible officers of the University: Students should not, on any account, insult or assault them. Any Students aggrieved by any employee of the University shall make a report of such grievance to the Director of Students Affairs who shall take the matter up with the appropriate quarters of the University.
  7. No students may be absent from class without prior authorization except for reasons of health which should be justified. Students are to be punctual to class, show due respect to their teachers and maintain order and quiet in the class.
  8. Students are advised not smoke as this is dangerous to their health. In any case, no smoking is allowed in the Administrative building, Restaurant, Classroom, Lecture halls, Laboratories and Library
  9. No liquor may be sold or consumed on the University Campus. Any student found drunk or misbehaving under the influence of alcohol either on or off-campus shall be severely disciplined
  10. The possession and/or consumption of any dangerous drug is prohibited. Any student found contravening this regulation shall be summarily dismissed from the University
  11. Any student found stealing shall be severely disciplined in accordance with the University Regulations. Those found stealing outside the University premises may be handed over to the law enforcement officers

Undergraduate Programme

Diploma in law (capacite en droit)

Duration : 2 years, (4 Semesters).

This special programme prepares students with a minimum of 4 GCE O/Level papers or equivalent for admission into the University. It also builds the capacities of professionals/administrators who require a legal background.             

BACHELOR OF LAWS (LLB) IN

  • English Private Law,
  • French Private Law,
  • Public Law.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (BSc) IN:

Political Science  

Duration: 3 years (6 semesters).

Entry Requirements:

  1. Four Ordinary Level papers excluding Religious Studies, including English language, BEPC and probatoire;
  2. Two Advanced Level subjects in one sitting excluding Religious Studies or Baccalaureate.

Postgraduate Programmes

MASTER OF LAWS (LLM) IN:

  • English Private Law,
  • Public Law.

MASTER OF SCIENCE (MSc) IN:

  • Comparative Politics,
  • Public Administration and Public Policy,
  • International Relations and Strategic Studies.

Duration: 2 years.

Entry requirements:

Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Bachelor of Science (BSc) in

Political Science or any related disciplines.

Professional and Paid Programmes

Professional Master in

  • Public Policy and Public Administration,
  •  Negotiation, Mediation and Peace Building.

Duration: 2 years

Entry requirements: Any Bachelor’s Degree.

CONVERSION PROGRAMMES

  •  Conversion Master in English Private Law,
  • Conversion Master in Public Law.

Duration: 1 Year.

Entry requirements:

Professional Master Degree in Law or any equivalent Qualification.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF STUDY IN THE FLPS

The FLPS runs both classical academic degree programmes and professional degree programmes. The professional programmes are limited to the Masters Level and do not provide the possibility for enrolment into the Ph.D. programmes offered by the Faculty.

1. Undergraduate Level

  • Five Ordinary Level papers in one sitting excluding Religious Studies, including English language or BEPC and Probatoire.
  • Two Advanced level subjects in one sitting excluding Religious Studies, or a Baccalaureate.

2. Postgraduate Programmes

 

  1. Master of Laws Degree (LL.M) or Masters of Science in Political Science (MSc)                                                                                                                    Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) in Political Science or equivalent, in the related field or as may be specifically defined by the Department at the time of admission. The duration of studies at this level is two years or four Semesters after Bachelor’s Degree.
  2. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Master of Laws Degree (LLM), Master of Science in Political Science (MSc) or equivalent in the related field or as may be specifically defined by the Department at the time of admission. The duration of studies at this level is three years or six Semesters, at least, and five years or ten semesters, at most, after the Master’s Degree.

3. Professional Programmes

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), Professional master degree in Law, Bachelors of Science in Political Science (BSc),  or equivalent, in any related field or as may be specifically defined by the Department. The duration of studies at this level is two years or four Semesters after Bachelor’s Degree.
