Department of English Private Law

Mission statement

The Department of English Private Law offers training in law in the Anglo-Saxon tradition. In this regard, it undertakes to produce high quality and analytical legal scholars who will not only have it relatively easy to integrate themselves wherever they find themselves but they will also, in their scholastic contribution and proficient and innovative research in the domain of law, help The University of Bamenda achieve her dream of being the University of the future.

Above all, it intends to contribute its portion to making Cameroon become an emerging country in the year 2035 as envisaged in the National Development Strategy (SND30). The Department is equally committed to indulge in innovative research to grapple with the key issues of law and legal education to prepare students for leadership and lawyering skills in any part of the world. This will be achieved by producing graduates whose qualifications are not only recognised in Cameroon, but also internationally, underpinned by valves of engaged citizenship and social justice. The students will be groomed to develop new technique, learn new areas of Law, acquire new advocacy skills and possess the ability to operate in new legal or other professional settings after graduation.

The Department will promote diversity and transformation within the institution and beyond including growing the next generation of lawyers, judges, legal writers, teachers, notaries, bailiffs, court clerks, etc. Graduates will be grounded in knowledge and professional training which will enhance creativity, self-employability and employment opportunities within the global contest. In this regard, the Department intends to transform what hitherto had seemingly been a slogan “one student, one job or employment opportunity” into reality. They will have the capacity to adapt to technological changes and innovations. They will be able to analyse problems, find realistic solutions to social problems and foster development.
